Tory Burch Reveals The Truth About Ambition

I would say being an entrepreneur is being okay with being out of your comfort zone.
I’m Tory Burch, mother, CEO, designer.
When I first started the company, there were so many comments and raised eyebrows and skepticism,
it was basically towards the entire concept, towards the logo, towards a retail store.
I’m an information gatherer, so I did like to hear other peoples’ points of view,
but then again, in 2004, people told me no one would ever buy online,
and that launching with an e-commerce site was a waste of time.
What I’ve learned over time is you have to go with your instinct and you have to believe in your idea.
I started Embrace Ambition because when I started the company,
the first article that was written on us was written by the New York Times, and a friend of mine read it and said it’s a nice article,
but you shied away from the word ambition.
And I realized that she was right.
And since then, I realized it was a negative word associated with women, and it was celebrated in men,
and when I touched on that with a public service announcement a year and a half ago,
it ended up reaching 192 countries,
so I know that this word is a word that we have to get rid of as far as the negative association with women,
and we need to celebrate ambitious women.
I learned so many things from our first Embrace Ambition summit.
We dealt with stereotypes, unconscious bias, and of course, the word ambition,
and it was really interesting hearing so many different women and men’s stories around that word and some of the unconscious bias that exists.
I learned that sharing stories is the first step to creating change, and that’s something we want to do.
