How To Ask for A Raise

TRANSKRIP
You’ve been giving 110% for a while now.
You volunteered for every project your boss hands out
and yet they haven’t even hinted at the possibility of giving you a raise or promotion.
So it’s time to take matters into your own hands.
But before approaching them,
here are four questions you need to ask yourself.
Number one, have I been performing at a level beyond what’s expected of my role?
Regardless of how long you’ve been at the company
or how long it’s been since your last raise,
job performance is your best argument.
Ideally, you’ve been outdoing yourself for the last six months.
That way, when you talk to your boss
you can argue that you’ve already delivered the results that merit a raise.
Number two, have I documented my achievements and figured out how to present them?
You may think your work speaks for itself,
but that’s because you’re the one paying the most attention to it.
Your boss has other things on their plate to worry about,
other employees, their boss,
that’s why it’s crucial to quantify your achievements in the most tangible, impactful way possible.
Perhaps you saved the company X amount of dollars or increased sales by X percent.
Numbers are great because they are not subjective.
If you don’t really know what constitutes success in your role,
well, you may wanna delay this raise conversation and first speak to your boss about what success means to them.
Then you can actually hammer this out.
Number three, do I have mentors who can advocate for me?
Even if your boss is all about giving you a raise,
they still need to get approval from their boss, from the CEO, perhaps from human resources.
But if you have endorsements from other senior leaders in the company,
it will make the approval more likely.
Now, don’t go around and tell your other mentors,
hey, I’m gonna ask for a raise, will you back me up?
That could be construed as going over your boss’s head and that’s no bueno.
Instead you could start casual conversations with them,
perhaps asking how long have you worked here and what has your path been like?
If you go to them asking for general advice,
they’ll be more likely to back you up when the time comes.
Number four, am I prepared to take on the additional responsibilities that might come with this raise?
In other words, are you aware of what you’re asking for?
If all you’re seeing is dollar signs or a fancy title, check yourself.
Most raises and certainly promotions come with additional responsibilities that you’re probably not doing right now.
If your pay increases, so must your value add to the company.
Sure it’d be great to have more money,
but do you want this extra work in your life?
Do you want to climb this corporate ladder?
In this day and age, a lot of people are blinded by achievement addiction
and then they wake up in five to 10 years and realize this isn’t what I wanna be doing.
So before approaching your boss, before asking for a raise or promotion, make sure to consider these questions.
Good luck.

TERJEMAHAN
You’ve been giving 110% for a while now.

You volunteered for every project your boss hands out

and yet they haven’t even hinted at the possibility of giving you a raise or promotion.
tapi mereka belum mengisyaratkan kemungkinan memberimu kenaikan gaji atau jabatan.

So it’s time to take matters into your own hands.
Jadi waktunya bertindak.

But before approaching them,
Tapi sebelum mendekati mereka,

here are four questions you need to ask yourself.

Number one, have I been performing at a level beyond what’s expected of my role?

Regardless of how long you’ve been at the company

or how long it’s been since your last raise,

job performance is your best argument.
kinerja adalah argumen terbaikmu.

Ideally, you’ve been outdoing yourself for the last six months.

That way, when you talk to your boss
Dengan demikian, ketika kamu berbicara pada atasanmu

you can argue that you’ve already delivered the results that merit a raise.

Number two, have I documented my achievements and figured out how to present them?

You may think your work speaks for itself,
Kamu mungkin berpikir pekerjaanmu bisa dilihat,

but that’s because you’re the one paying the most attention to it.
tapi itu karena kamulah yang paling memperhatikan.

Your boss has other things on their plate to worry about,

other employees, their boss,
karyawan lain, atasan mereka,

that’s why it’s crucial to quantify your achievements in the most tangible, impactful way possible.

Perhaps you saved the company X amount of dollars or increased sales by X percent.
Mungkin kamu menghemat perusahaan sejumlah X dolar atau meningkatkan penjualan hingga X persen.

Numbers are great because they are not subjective.
Angka-angka itu bagus karena mereka tidak subyektif.

If you don’t really know what constitutes success in your role,

well, you may wanna delay this raise conversation and first speak to your boss about what success means to them.
Well, kamu mungkin perlu menunda percakapan tentang kenaikan gaji ini dan berbicara dulu pada atasanmu tentang apa definisi sukses menurut mereka.

Then you can actually hammer this out.
Lalu kamu bisa mendiskusikan itu.

Number three, do I have mentors who can advocate for me?

Even if your boss is all about giving you a raise,
Bahkan jika atasanmu mendukung kenaikan gajimu,

they still need to get approval from their boss, from the CEO, perhaps from human resources.
mereka masih perlu mendapatkan persetujuan dari atasan mereka, dari Direktur Utama, mungkin dari Departemen HR.

But if you have endorsements from other senior leaders in the company,

it will make the approval more likely.
itu akan membuat lebih mudah disetujui.

Now, don’t go around and tell your other mentors,
Jangan pergi berkeliling kantor dan memberi tahu mentor-mentormu,

hey, I’m gonna ask for a raise, will you back me up?
hei, saya akan menanyakan tentang kenaikan gaji, maukah anda mendukung saya?

That could be construed as going over your boss’s head and that’s no bueno.

Instead you could start casual conversations with them,

perhaps asking how long have you worked here and what has your path been like?

If you go to them asking for general advice,
Kalau kamu menemui mereka menanyakan nasehat umum,

they’ll be more likely to back you up when the time comes.
mereka akan cenderung mendukungmu ketika saatnya tiba.

Kalau gajimu naik, begitu pula nilai tambahmu kepada perusahaan.

Sure it’d be great to have more money,
Memang bagus untuk mendapat tambahan uang,

but do you want this extra work in your life?
tapi apakah kamu ingin pekerjaan tambahan dalam hidupmu?

Do you want to climb this corporate ladder?
Apakah kamu ingin naik tangga korporasi ini?

In this day and age, a lot of people are blinded by achievement addiction

and then they wake up in five to 10 years and realize this isn’t what I wanna be doing.

So before approaching your boss, before asking for a raise or promotion, make sure to consider these questions.
Jadi sebelum mendekati atasanmu, sebelum meminta kenaikan gaji atau jabatan, pastikan kamu pertimbangkan pertanyaan-pertanyaan di atas.

Good luck.
Semoga berhasil.
